The lithium battery for RV landscape has changed a lot in the past decade, and the one thing that has gotten more popular because of that is RV solar. It’s easy to see why so many people have started boondocking more and enjoying being in remote camping areas.

In this article, we will give you as much information as possible for you to determine the BEST lithium battery for RV use on the market.

You also need to know that depending on the type of RV you have there may be two different kinds of batteries.

A towable RV will only have house batteries, but a drivable RV like a Class A motorhome, Class B motorhome, Class C motorhome have two separate systems.

You have a “chassis battery” that starts and runs the engine and there is a “house battery(ies)” that store power to be used by your lights and 12 volt appliances. You can also use your RVs house batteries to run through an inverter which will bump the 12 volt up to 120 volt, which can be used by your regular 120 volt appliances.

We will focus on the best lithium battery for RV house batteries.

Lead-Acid vs AGM Battery vs Best Lithium Battery for RV Power

Most people reading this will likely be trying to figure out whether to use a deep cycle lead-acid battery, an AGM battery or a lithium battery to store the power coming in from their RV solar systems. If you can afford it, we highly recommend lithium as your best choice for an RV solar application.

When we installed our RV solar system back in 2018, the difference in cost between AGM batteries and lithium batteries was huge.

We installed 4 Full River AGM batteries for a total capacity of 500 amp hours of storage.

The cost was approximately $1,300.

With a deep cycle AGM battery, you can only use about 50-60% of your total capacity, so for us it was between 250-300 amp hours. That’s $5.20 per amp hour.

At the time, an equivalent lithium battery solution that would give us 250-300 amp hours of storage would have run $3,000 or $10 per amp hour.

With the cost per amp hour being twice as much we couldn’t justify pulling the trigger for a lithium battery for RV house batteries, at the time.

Now you have lithium batteries like the 460Ah Epoch lithium battery coming in at approximately $4.34 per amp hour.

UPDATE: We just made a deal (March 2025) with OKMO Batteries and will be installing 2-280Ah lithium batteries in our RV in mid to late March. We will have video on the install and will have follow up videos to let you know how they perform.

It’s time to upgrade to a lithium battery for more RV power!

Even if you don’t have solar, you can use lithium batteries because it will give you the added amp hours you need for a better boondocking experience. You will most likely need to upgrade your RV converter because most stock RV converters don’t have the proper output to be able to charge lithium batteries.

And once you start down the rabbit hole of upgrading batteries and chargers, you might as well install an RV inverter charger.

And once you’ve done that, RV solar is the next logical step. Then you will have a boondocking machine that will allow you to spend more time off-grid and camped in remote areas or on a lake where power is not available.

Yes, you could use a generator, but trust me when I tell you that RV solar is the way to go for the best (quietest) camping or boondocking experience!

With the price of lithium batteries coming down over the past few years, you will not be able to justify the amount of money you will save by buying an AGM battery or regular lead-acid deep cycle.
