Are you trying to determine what the BEST RV INVERTER CHARGER is for you? We have some information that we think you’ll find helpful.
Obviously, not all RV inverter chargers are built the same. Some brands try to get customers by paying the least amount possible, figuring they’ll have more profits.
More intelligent inverter charger brands (looking at the long-term) usually make a better quality product, but ask that you pay a little more. This ensures they get repeat business if and when it is time for an upgrade or if you buy a new RV.
As a result, choosing the best RV inverter charger for you can be challenging.
Another problem with researching for information on the best RV inverter charger is that some websites show a list of RV inverter chargers, but some are NOT inverter chargers, nor are they RV inverter chargers. In all honesty, most inverter chargers are not RV specific and can be used in any off-grid application.
When we talk about RV inverter chargers, it’s usually because they work well in your RV’s 12 volt system.
For something to be considered an “inverter charger” it must do both processes. It converts 110 volt to 12 volt and 12 volt to 110 volt. If it ONLY converts 110 volt to 12 volt it is either a converter or battery charger. If it ONLY inverts 12 volts to 110 volts it is an inverter only.
A good rule of thumb if you are only looking at inverters is to make sure it’s 2000 watts or above and we recommend going to 3,000 watts. Anything less than that will barely allow you to run one appliance in your RV at a time. Just preparing you morning breakfast with a coffee maker and a microwave will use between 2,000 and 2,500 watts.
Why should you trust this post?
My name is Paul Charron and my wife Lorena and I have been criss-crossing North America since 2016 in our 2006 Fleetwood Flair motorhome.
We’ve made quite a few upgrades to our coach, including a complete RV solar system install. I would change a few things, like upgrade our batteries to lithium, but our current RV solar setup includes:
- 6 175 watt Newpowa RV solar panels, for a total of 1,050 watts (roof mounted)
- 4 6 volt Full River AGM batteries wired for 12 volts and 500 amp hours
- Victron 150/100 (150 volt/100 amp) Solar Charge Controller
- Xantrex Freedom SW3012 RV Inverter Charger
- A few other fuses, cables, switches, bits and pieces you need for everything to be connected
I installed all of this myself, with a little help from my friend Kevin from VeganRV.com, who happens to have an even more badass RV solar system!
I like to figure this stuff out on my own. Sure, some mistakes are made along the way, but hopefully I make those mistakes, so you don’t have to.
We either use the products we review, in everyday situations, or talk to people who are currently using them, to get their take. We have a multi-point methodology to rate each one on factors like:
- Durability: Does it have the ability to hold up under the stresses of RV life?
- Functionality: Does it perform well in its intended use?
- Easy to Install: Is this a DIY job or do you need to bring in a pro?
- Easy to use or program: Can a beginner get it up and running easily?
Our handy guide has picks for every budget level so everyone can get a great RV inverter charger for their rig. And if you’re looking to save on space, check out the best RV inverter charger to tuck into tight spots.

Best RV Inverter Charger Input/Output
Keep in mind that the best RV inverter charger for your RV is likely going to be a unit that accepts 120/240 volt and 12 volt input and output. You can use other voltages, such as a 24 or 48 volt inverter charger, but then you will have to deal with getting the voltage back to 12 volts to be used with your RV.
That is something to be tackled in a different article.
What is The Difference Between Modified Sine Wave and Pure Sine Wave Inverters
Devices with three-prong plugs need pure sine wave utility-grade power. For mobile AC needs, we can use power inverters to convert DC from vehicle batteries to AC that we can use in our RVs. Inverters come in various price and quality ranges.
Modified Sine Wave Inverters
Modified sine wave inverters offer a budget-friendly option for running appliances and tools less sensitive to power fluctuations, like lights and certain tools. While they work fine for devices like motors and heaters, others such as battery chargers, audio/video equipment, and computers may malfunction or sustain damage due to waveform distortion. It’s crucial to check for UL listings when buying a modified sine wave inverter, as they may lack certification due to waveform distortion known as Total Harmonic Distortion (THD).
Pure Sine Wave Inverters
Pure sine wave inverters replicate utility-grade power, enhancing the efficiency of tools and computers while preventing heat-related failures. Audio and video devices like TVs and stereos produce clear sound and images. Cordless tool chargers preserve battery life. Certain devices such as variable speed motors and communication equipment require pure sine power. Appliances like refrigerators operate more smoothly with pure sine wave power. To ensure longevity, opt for UL-listed pure sine wave power inverters and inverter/chargers.
Modified Sinewave Pros and Cons
Pros
Less expensive
Cons
Won’t run sensitive power electronics like computers or variable-speed motors
Pure Sinewave Pros and Cons
Pros
Utility-grade power
Will run any device
Cons
More expensive
With the information above you can deduct that the best RV inverter charger will have pure sine wave AC output.
Your RV appliances will operate better if you use a pure sine wave inverter charger and could actually get damaged if you don’t use one.
With that in mind, we will focus on inverter chargers that are pure sine wave, have similar input and output voltages.
Let’s dive right into the Top 7 best RV inverter chargers.
What is The Best RV Inverter Charger?
Picking the best RV inverter charger for your needs depends on many things.
It’s like picking any product.
Sometimes you just feel it’s best for you. Some people are loyal to certain brands because they’ve used them before or heard about them from a friend.
Ultimately you’ll want a combination of all of the above. If you haven’t used one before, you’ll want to do your own research.
You’ll want to determine how many appliances you have and how much current draw those appliances have.
Talk to friends and even ask your RV neighbor that you notice has a bunch of solar on his roof.

1. Xantrex Freedom SW3012
Paul’s Perspective
I have to say that I am partial to the Xantrex Freedom SW because it was the best RV inverter charger for me at the time I installed our RV solar system.
I don’t remember what initially attracted me to Xantrex other than brand recognition, but it has not disappointed us ever.
The install was pretty straight forward and it didn’t give me any trouble during the install at all. The programming of all of this stuff is pretty intimidating at first, but if you walk through the manual a little at a time I think most DIY RV folks can handle it.
We have had zero issues running our appliances in our RV with the Xantrez Freedom SW. We have a 30 amp coach and have our entire RV electrical system running through it.
We can even run one of our air conditioners using just solar and battery power, even without a soft start. I will say we have air conditioners that have a “shedding” feature that I believe is very much like a soft start, so I can’t guarantee you would be able to do the same.
I also can’t recall if they had other solar products at the time, like solar charge controllers and things because I think keeping all of your equipment the same brand makes integration much easier.
With that being said I don’t know if I would do the Xantrex RV inverter charger again or go with Victron because my RVs solar charge controller is Victron and it’s worked like a charm as well.
